Thailand’s Deputy Commerce Minister Alongkorn Ponlaboot said on Sunday the Ministry aimed to increase the exports of fruit, among other food and electronic products, to northeastern China.
Three provinces in the region would be targeted by a trade office, which Mr Ponlaboot said the Ministry would ask the government to establish using funds from the Thai Khem Keng (Stronger Thai) project, reported the Bangkok Post.
The plan follows the signing of a trade agreement between the two countries, which aims to boost the bilateral trade and investment already worth THB12bn (US$353m).
Thailand currently sells around 110,000 tonnes of fruit annually into the Jiang Nan market in Guangzhou, China’s largest wholesale market. That figure is forecast to hit 200,000 tonnes in the next two years.
Thailand’s fruit exports have been experiencing a number of expansion projects in recent months, notably retail chain Tesco’s scheme to boost exports via its supply chain.
