Pineapple exports from Taiwan’s Pintung County have almost doubled so far this year with the majority of fruit shipped to China.
According to a report by Focus Taiwan, exports between the months of January and July reached 2,200 tonnes – up almost 50 per cent on the same period last year.
Exports to China have spiked this year to 1,550 tonnes - up from 670 tonnes last year. This has seen China eclipse Japan as the leading importer of Taiwanese pineapples.
Japan imported 610 tonnes for the first half the year, down some 200 tonnes on the same period in 2011.
