A government-backed pineapple farm for export-oriented production officially opened in Tainan, Taiwan, on Tuesday (24 July), reports focustaiwan.tw.
The 50ha initiative is designed to boost the fruit export sector in the region, which is currently very successfully exporting mangoes, the article said.
Some 1,400ha of pineapples are already cultivated in Tainan, but this new farm - which will receive government support – will focus specifically on exports and not permit the use of growth hormones, commonly used in Taiwanese pineapple production.
At the farm's official opening ceremony, Tainan mayor Lai Ching-te said the government would do its best to help market the pineapples to countries such as Japan and Singapore.
