Rebels in the Philippines aligned with the New People’s Army set alight two trucks carrying bananas for Sumifru and Dole on Wednesday.

According to a report by Business World, the incident comes just two days after rebels from the group attacked a plantation owned by Sumifru. It is alleged armed guards and soldiers killed six rebels during the attack.

A military official told the news source the attack on the trucks was likely in retaliation for the incident at the Sumifru plantation.

Eighth IB commanding officer Lt Col Jose Maria R Cuerpo II told Business World corporate extortion motivated rebel attacks in the region – especially against agribusiness operators that refused to pay ‘revolutionary tax’.

Sumifru operates around 13,000ha of plantations in the Davao and Central Mindanao regions and directly supports 30,000 employees, Business World reported.
