A banana plantation owned by Dole Philippines is the latest to be attacked by communist guerrillas in the southern Philippine region of Mindanao.
Two pieces of machinery were burned by the New People’s Army at the farm in Tago, Surigao del Sur, and an undetermined number of banana palms were uprooted, reported Xinhua.
The attack was reprisal against Dole’s refusal to pay ‘revolutionary taxes’ to the rebel group, according to Major Michele Anayron, spokesman for the Philippine Army’s 4th Infantry Division.
Several banana plantations have been attacked by communist rebel forces in Mindanao in the last year, despite heavy crackdowns by the country’s military and vows from the government to wipe them out.
