The wet start to the year has brought on an early start to the citrus harvest in the northern Australian state of Queensland, the ABC has reported.

The state's Central Burnett region is the largest producer of mandarins in Australia and will harvest tens of thousands of tonnes this season, a crop roughly equal in size to last year's.

Blue Cow Citrus packing shed manager Chris Bryant said the wet weather had brought the picking season on early, and made sure it would be a busy start to the season.

"We're in full production in only our third week and we were in our full production in our second week and we've never done that before," Mr Bryant said.

"So she's started with a bang. Beautiful size, slight wind rub problem as far as the external quality, but that's only skin deep. The inside of the fruit is beautiful."
