A new trade forecast from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has predicted that fresh fruit and vegetable imports into the US will outweigh exports for the 12-month period ended 30 September 2012.

The USDA forecasts that fresh produce imports will come in at US$13.6bn for the fiscal year, with exports pegged at US$6.9bn, The Packer reported.

These figures are up on the US$12.8bn for imports and US$6.6bn for exports recorded in fiscal 2011, the USDA noted.

Tomatoes, bananas, table grapes and berries topped the list of imports into the US, while the leading exports in value terms were apples, oranges and tangerines, berries, lettuce and grapefruit.
