The Philippines Avocado industry hopes South Korea will grant access for the fruit in light of a recent trade deal allowing Korean capsicums into the country.
“Allowing us market access for avocados is just a matter of simple reciprocity, Bureau of Plant Industry director Clarito M Barron told the Business Mirror. “Whenever a country allows the entry of any commodity, the recipient country harbours the notion that it should also seek to have its produce enter its trading partner’s market,” he added.
A pest risk analysis for Philippines avocados was being drafted, said Barron, and a team of Korean agricultural inspectors was expected to visit the country during the first quarter of the year.
The newspaper stated Korea could be more open to establishing a protocol for avocados as it hopes to begin exporting both broccoli and strawberries to the Philippines.
