Horticultural exports from Peru to Asia have risen 95.6 per cent in the first five months of 2014, according to Peru’s agricultural association AGAP.
Red Globe and seedless varieties of grapes are driving the increase in exports, with China accounting for 28.76 per cent of Peru’s Asian export market, followed by Hong Kong (27.91 per cent) and Thailand (14.65 per cent).
In a press released, AGAP said that exports of Peruvian fruit to China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia have all increased by more than 100 per cent in the first five months of this year compared to the same period in 2013.
Total agricultural exports rise 22 per cent
Overall, agricultural exports from Peru have topped US$1,753m in the first five months of this year, according to Peru’s Ministry of Agriculture.
Driven primarily by sales of table grapes, avocados and mangos, exports have increased 22 per cent from January to May compared to the same period year, with fruit and vegetable exports accounting for 92.7 per cent of the total export value.
The US comes in as Peru’s leading export market, valued at US$90m, followed by China (US$38m), Hong Kong (US$36m), the Netherlands, Italy and Canada.
