Exports of Peruvian mangoes are apparently forecast to increase by 40 per cent during the 2012/13 season, which runs from November to March.

The Peruvian Mango Exporters Association (Apem) said it expects production could reach a similar level to 2009/10 when some 100,000 tonnes were produced, according to a report by Fresh Fruit Portal.

The latest estimate reportedly surpasses Apem’s previous expectations of a 70,000-tonne crop, thanks to El Niño retreating from the Peruvian coast and weather conditions returning to normal.

The outlook is still down on the 130,000 tonnes produced during the 2010/11 season, the report said.

Peru exports fresh mangoes mainly to Europe and the US and the industry is also developing a presence in Asia.
