US-based firm PakSense has unveiled AutoSense, an automatic monitoring system capable of delivering cold chain temperature data to smartphones.
The system is self-contained and utilises cellular networks, meaning IT departments are not required to oversee its installation or perform ongoing maintenance.
David Oster, CEO at PakSense, said AutoSense has been designed to improve efficiencies at perishable receiving locations, including distribution centers and retail stores.
“Many suppliers, retailers and processors are looking to modernize and automate their temperature monitoring programmes,” Oster said. “With AutoSense, we provide an easy-to-install solution that delivers data directly to quality assurance personnel while simultaneously creating a cold chain temperature record - all with minimal human intervention.”
AutoSense components include PakSense’s wireless labels, which are placed on perishable loads to monitor temperatures. When a product is received, the labels are automatically detected by an AutoSense reader, with cold chain data automatically forwarded to a pre-defined user via email or text message.
Data delivered to the smartphone includes supplier name, product description, temperature alert condition and receiving location. Data can also be forwarded to a central repository for ongoing carrier, supplier and route analysis.
“AutoSense was widely tested in more than 14 distribution centers and has proven it helps companies increase efficiencies,” Oster explained. “Employees have access to cold chain information at their fingertips, enabling better food quality and safety decisions.”
