Expected downturn in Australian production means its neighbour stands to improve on last year’s disappointing campaign
Avocado growers in New Zealand reportedly expect stronger pricing on the international market this season, with production in Australia and Peru set to be lower.
According to a report in the NZ Herald, production in Australia was 30 per cent up in 2023/24 at almost 151,000 tonnes, but that figure is set to fall as growers contend with low prices and higher input costs.
After a poor crop in New Zealand left more fruit sold in the domestic market, this time around exports are due to recover.
New Zealand Avocado Growers’ Association vice-president Anna St George told the newspaper the country will export around half of the 6.8mn trays it produces this year, compared with just 1.3mn last time.
That result should improve last season’s NZ$20mn export revenue, which was well below the NZ$168mn achieve in 2020/21.
