BJ Thurlby, president of the Washington State Fruit Commission, has reported on the latest figures from this season's US Northwest cherry crop.
According to Thurlby, through 54 days of shipping this season, the five-state Northwest region has shipped 18.1m boxes of cherries.
Over the week-long period (to 1 August) the industry averaged 383,443 boxes per day, an increase of 17.5 per cent over the 2011 average for the same period, and a 23 per cent jump on the seven-day average for 2009.
'Many growers have reported that they picking out 15 per cent to 20 per cent longer than estimated on some late season varieties,' Thurlby explained. 'Likewise, it appears that the industry should surpass the round 3 crop estimate that was set at 21m boxes in late May.'
