Container shipping group Maersk Line has revealed that it is to enforce further rate changes on some of its key trade routes, due to current levels being 'unsustainable' in the long-term.
The Europe-Middle East/South Asia line will see a number of changes come into force on either 1 July or the 1 September, as a result not only of 'unacceptable' rate levels but also improved demand.
The increases are as follows:
South Asia to the Mediterranean and North Europe service:
- US$250 per 20ft dry container, effective 1 July 2009
- US$500 per 40ft dry container, effective 1 July 2009
- US$150 per 20ft dry container' effective 1 September 2009
- US$300 per 40ft dry container, effective 1 September 2009
Mediterranean to Middle East and South Asia service:
- US$100 per 20ft dry container, effective 1 July 2009
- US$200 per 40ft dry container, effective 1 July 2009
Additionally, the group is upping rates on the Far East to Europe trade service, again applying to all cargo and commodities including reefers and special equipment.
Far East to Mediterranean and North Europe service:
- US$300 per TEU, effective 1 July 2009
- US$150 per TEU, effective from 1 August until 31 October 2009 (Peak Season Surcharge)
'The rate increases are necessary to continue to operate our services with the high level of reliability our customers have come to expect from Maersk Line,' the group said in a statement.
