Maersk Line has announced that it is to launch its brand new Icon service in March this year, covering south/east India and Sri Lanka to and from north Europe.

According to the group, south Asia represents one of the world's fastest growing sourcing areas for its customers, and the Icon service provides a unique and dedicated link to north Europe, with Maersk Line's schedule reliability being a trademark of the service.

'Being in close dialogue with our customers helps us spot trends in sourcing and anticipate future needs,' said Vincent Clerc, vice-president for Europe services at Maersk Line. 'That is how we came up with the Icon service.

'It is a milestone in the development of our coverage of the Indian subcontinent and shows Maersk Line's dedication to supporting growth in this region,' he added.

The Icon service deploys seven 3,400 TEU vessels and operates with a port rotation of Chennai, Colombo, Salalah, Zeebrugge, Felixstowe, Rotterdam, Bremerhaven, Salalah and Colombo.

highlights of the service include a dedicated service between Chennai and northern Europe, Fast transit times from south/east India and Sri Lanka to north Europe, fast feeder links via Colombo to and from Bangladesh, and efficient time delivery.
