There is optimism across the Indian mango industry that this season could see exports to the US reach as high as 650 tonnes, having already reached the 500-tonne mark by 4 June.
This new benchmark was achieved through irradiated mangoes from Lasalgaon and Vashri being shipped in greater numbers than ever before – the previous record was 328 tonnes during the corresponding period of 2015, Times of India reported.
'A customer base has developed in the US during the past few years,' an official told the publication. 'Exports, which stood at 95 tonnes in 2010, have reached 500 tonnes so far [this season].'
