Kiwifruit generic

According to widespread reports in New Zealand, the Mexican government has scrapped a 20 per cent tariff on kiwifruit imports from the country.

Reacting to the news, New Zealand trade minister Tim Groser said that the move would save his country's kiwifruit industry up to NZ$1m (US$0.8m) per year, and noted that it would level the playing field with the likes of the US and Chile, which already enjoy tariff-free access to Mexico.

Following the announcement by Mexican secretary ofeconomy Bruno Ferrari, Groser said: 'This has been a tough time for New Zealand growers as theygrapple with the effects of Psa on production, and this is a littlebit of good news for them.'

While the move could lead to further trade possibilities in the future, the kiwifruit industry is now the focus, with Zespri indicating that it is already looking to set up a pilot plant to produce kiwifruit in Mexico during New Zealand's off season, Radio New Zealand reported.
