As the fourth-largest retail group after Walmart, Carrefour and Tesco, Metro is expanding its presence in India as well as Russia, China and Turkey.
Metro Cash & Carry, the self-service wholesale arm of Metro, has been operating in India since 2003, with 16 distribution centres across 12 cities. Tailoring its projects to suit local needs, Metro Cash & Carry India focuses on working with smaller, independent shops known as Kirana, as well as hotels and restaurants.
The company now operates in 32 countries, building its reputation on working with professional customers rather than directly with consumers.
