Metro Cash & Carry India, part of the German wholesale group Metro, has opened a new Metro Cash & Carry outlet in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. This is its fifteenth outlet, with plans to open similar stores at Bhopal and Japalpur in the near future.
Rajeev Bakshi, managing director of Metro Cash & Carry India, announced an investment of Rs700m (US$12.97m) in the new outlet.
Bakshi said the new store would deliver significant benefits to the local community, with 300 people employed and provided with three to six months of training.
The store is also expected to bring considerable economic benefit to local fruit and vegetable growers and meat producers. Vishal Sehgal, the head of Metro Corporate Relations, stressed the company’s policy of purchasing from local vendors to benefit the region in which they operate.
With over 10,000 food and non-food products available for customers, Bakshi estimated Metro Cash & Carry’s wholesale business to be worth approximately Rs20bn rupees in Indore.
