Maersk container

Global shipping line Maersk has announced a surcharge on freight travelling through the Port of Auckland to cover losses from industrial action there.

According to a report in the New Zealand Herald, Maersk has advised customers it could no longer absorb the “significant extra costs' associated with an industrial dispute at the port.

The line will now charge an additional US$80 for each 20-ft container, and double this figure for a 40-ft container.

In December Maersk moved 40 per cent of its Auckland business to the Port of Tauranga because of the industrial action.
