The first of Freshmax’s Munch’n kiwiberries are being picked, significantly earlier than previous seasons.
The fruit, known as Hortgem Tahi is typically harvested in a short window during late February, through to early-mid April. This year, New Zealand saw its hottest summer on record which has contributed to the early harvest.
The first fruit is expected to be exported to customers this weekend, before the beginning of Chinese New Year celebrations, that start on February 16.
“Excitement is mounting for the upcoming season,” said Tracey Bruns, export division manager at Freshmax.
A global marketing campaign will begin next week for the fruit, which is available in New Zealand, Australia, Malaysia, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Freshmax said they are feeling positive about the season ahead.
