Chinese officials have approved Kashgar International Airport as the only port of entry for fruit imports in Xinjiang, reports China Daily.
The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine gave the green light on 12 February, the report said.
The move will help meet China’s growing demand for fresh fruits from its surrounding region, including citrus and mangoes from Pakistan, and cherries from Tajikistan.
The airport is located in the city of Kashgar, an oasis county-level city with nearly 350,000 residents, and is considered to be the westernmost Chinese city nearest the countries of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, said China Daily.
