Japan will place stricter limits on radiation levels permitted in vegetables as of April 1, reports www.themalaysianinsider.com.

Under the revised regulations, the upper limit on foods such as vegetables will be lowered from 500 becquerels per kg to 100 becquerels per kg.

Provisional limits were imposed after the Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear plant was damaged by a devastating earthquake and tsunami on March 11 last year.

Consumers are reportedly confused by the changes to restrictions, and are cautious in their purchases, the article said.

'If there really is a danger, then they should have set these limits a long time ago,' one housewife told the website.

Meanwhile, the European Union announced last month (February 24) that it was reinforcing controls on imports of food and feed from 12 prefectures in Japan, the article said.

The EU is stipulating that all produce from affected areas be tested before shipment out of Japan, and that it will be subject to random testing within the EU.
