Japan’s Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry will fund a new research and development programme with the goal of developing a range heat and drought-tolerant crops, according to the Japan News.
The move is aimed at countering the effects of global warming, with the ministry hoping to develop 10 or more new fruit, vegetable and rice varieties.
The ministry has allocated ¥400m to the programme this fiscal year, with intentions to secure the same level of investment over the next four years.
The Japanese Government intends to unveil a climate change adaptation plan in August, which the Japan News said is likely to be adopted as a national strategy.
