Port of Los Angeles US

The Port of Los Angeles has released its January 2012 cargo volumes, with the total number of 20ft-equivalent containers (TEUs) up 5.78 per cent on the same month last year.

According to Port of Los Angeles News, the 698,715 TEUs moved during the month is the highest total volume – incorporating imports, exports and empties – for January in the port's history.

Loaded imports increased by 5.25 per cent compared with January 2011, while exports climbed 5.9 per cent.

Some of the January increase was attributed to the increased movement of cargo prior to the 23 January Chinese New Year, which results in a one- to two-week holiday closure of many facilities in China.
