Indonesia is likely to ease import restrictions on a number of Thai fruits and vegetables, according to the Pattaya Mail.

Ahead of meetings with the Indonesian Agriculture Ministry this week, Surasak Riengkrua, deputy director of Thailand’s Foreign Trade Department, said new import quotas would be issued for Thai shallots and longan.

However, durian imports are likely to remain suspended until the end of the Indonesian durian season.

At the end of January, 13 kinds of fruit and vegetable products, including shallots, longan, potatoes and chillies were banned from entering Indonesia until July.

The move sparked protests from Thai exporters, who claimed to be suffering significant losses through the suspensions.

Riengkrua said quotas would only be issued to exporters who submitted approval requests at the end of January.

Thailand exported 36,000 tonnes of shallots and almost 120,000 tonnes of longan to Indonesia last year, with a combined value estimated at over Bt3bn (US$100m).
