Ginger imports into India have risen sharply because of strong demand for fresh ginger and poor local supplies, the Financial Express reported.
Imports rose steeply in October and November and will remain high at least until the new crop arrives.
The price of ginger is also high and although some feel this will ease after the new crop, others expect prices to remain high due to low output from China.
In the local markets fresh ginger is selling for around Rs45-50 per kg.
China, who supply one third of the world’s ginger, has endured a harsh summer and many farmers have planted less because of low returns.
Meanwhile, India’s ginger production is forecast to increase by 25-30 per cent because of the high prices.
With prices reaching record levels last year due to a shortage of the product, some farmers are keen on planting the crop again.
