Garlic

India is fast emerging as a key player in global garlic markets, after a poor 2009 production campaign from powerhouse China.

As well as it's traditional market of Bangladesh, Indian garlic is now exported to Pakistan, Thailand and Malaysia.

So far this financial year, the growth in Indian garlic exports has continued to increase at a rapid rate, with almost 5,425 tonnes exported in April alone, an increase of over 60 times what was shipped in the same period last year.

It is estimated that India will produce around 850,000 tonnes of the commodity this year, to become the second-largest producer, still well behind China which can claim to around 60-65 per cent of global supply.
