Agricultural land in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh has been swamped with water in recent floods, causing substantial crop losses and creating a rise in the prices of vegetables. According to traders, the last few days have shown the most common vegetables doubling in cost.

Prices of tomatoes and peas have shown the most significant rise, with tomatoes jumping from Rs20 (US$0.43) per kg to anywhere between Rs50-60 (US$1.08-1.29) and peas selling around Rs70-Rs80 (US$1.49-1.71) compared to their previous price of Rs40-50 (US$0.86-1.08) per kg.

The price of potatoes has also seen a rise from Rs10-12 (US$0.22-0.26) per kg to Rs15-20 (US$0.32 -0.43).

Other vegetables with significant price increases include capsicum, beans, cauliflower and okra.
