PepsiCo and the Clinton Foundation have announced an investment in small-scale cashew farmers in India’s Maharashtra region to boost production of cashew fruit for use in PepsiCo’s drinks.
Focusing on local farmers, the Clinton foundation, founded by former US president Bill Clinton, provides small-scale farmers with training to facilitate improvements in farming practices, boost yields and productivity.
The longer-term aim is to build up a strong cashew supply chain for future expansion in the domestic and export markets.
Cashew fruit will be sourced from 2,000 farmers this year with plans to extend to 15,000 over five years. PepsiCo has been in India since 1989, now employing around 6,400 people.
