India has begun exporting bananas to Pakistan following a decline in production there.

When Indian bananas first entered the market in Pakistan they sold for as much as Rs300 (US$5.40) per dozen, whereas locally grown fruit sells for around Rs70-80 per dozen, the Indian Express reported.

According to figures quoted in the report, banana production in Pakistan has fallen from 139,000 tonnes in 2010-2011, to 99,000 tonnes in 2011-2012.

All Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Importers Exporters and Merchants Association co-chairman Waheed Ahmed said grapes and mango had also been imported from India, but were not well received by Pakistani buyers.

Indian bananas were entering Pakistan through Kashmir and the Wagah land border crossing, he said.
