The Punjab state government in India will build a perishable cargo centre with a 30,000 tonnes storage capacity at Amritsar International Airport to aid the export of fresh produce from the area.
According to a report in the Times of India, the facility would be completed by June of next year and would be the third such facility in India, with centers currently operating in Mumbai and Cochin.
The state government also planned to construct around a dozen integrated packhouses to maintain a cold chain for produce destined for the airport.
These packhouses would be constructed at Abohar, Ferozepur, Taran Taran, Faridkot, Sangrur, Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, Ludhiana, Gurdaspur and Patiala, reported the newspaper.
The buildings would provide a mix of sorting, grading, washing, pre-cooling and cold storage facilities.
