Indian minister of state for agriculture KV Thomas has asked his Chinese counterpart Niu Dun to allow market access for more varieties of fruit and vegetables during a six-day visit to the country.

"China has already granted access to our mangoes, grapes and bitter gourd and I have requested it open up for other fruits and vegetables also," Mr Thomas told the Press Trust of India.

He was referring to fruits such as papayas, chikus, pineapples, guavas, musk melons, water melons and custard apples. Vegetables under consideration are okras, cucumbers, gherkins, cabbages, capsicums, brinjal and beans.

The response was a positive one, according to Mr Thomas, and Mr Niu has said he will look into the matter thoroughly.
