India’s vegetable production is estimated to have increased by more than five percent in the 2010-11 growing season.
According to a report in the Economic Times, vegetable production increased from 131m tonnes in 2009-10 to 141m tonnes in 2010-11.
The minister of state for agriculture Arun Yadav said there was an increase in volume of major vegetable lines, such as potato, brinjal, cabbage, cauliflower, peas and okra, according to the newspaper.
He added that onion production rose by over six per cent to 12.9m tonnes, up from 12.1m tonnes a year ago.
Potato production also rose by over four per cent, from 34.3m tonnes a year ago to 38m tonnes this year, the newspaper reported.
