Leading Indian importer-export IG International sees enormous potential for kinnow mandarin exports out of the South Asian nation, after commencing its first international sales programme with the fruit.
The company recently sent a 26 tonne consignment to Russia, which will be sold under the IG International brand.
IG International chairman GC Arora said the company hopes to grow the volume of its export programmes to around 5,000 tonnes of kinnow per year over the coming seasons.
To help achieve this goal, IG International has invested in cool chain infrastructure in Abohar, Punjab, to overcome supply chain bottlenecks and preserve the quality of the fruit. The investment has been made in collaboration with Balaji International, with the companies catering for the growing volume of kinnows now being cultivated in several regions of Punjab.
“Punjab has the ideal climate for producing kinnows,” Arora explained. “We see huge opportunity for the high quality kinnows grown in this region. We have set up special post harvest handling infrastructure to ensure availability kinnows throughout the year. The opening up of export market for this high yield fruit will prove a boon to the kinnow growers in the state.”
