A major dredging project at China’s Nansha port in Guangzhou will see the port capture more of the cargo trade in the region, according to JOC.com.
The US$415m project to widen the Guangzhou Port Channel will cut travel times for larger vessels by around three hours, and is just one of several upgrades to the port ahead of a planned public listing.
Other upgrades include the construction of a modern refrigerated warehouse, a US$1.64bn on-dock rail project to be complete by 2019, and a deal signed by the Guangzhou Port Group and SAIC Moto to develop an automobile logistics park.
JOC reports that funds from the public listing would go towards accelerating the port’s development and increase its competitiveness. As southern China’s fastest growing container port, Guangzhou saw throughput grow 5.5 per cent in the first eight months of 2015 to 11.8m TEU, with foreign container trade up 5.9 per cent to 2.31m TEUs in the first half of 2016.
