Zespri G9 gold

The Chinese market for New Zealand kiwifruit is booming, according to international marketer Zespri, which has officially unveiled its new longer-lasting Gold variety, G9, to a select group of customers at the Shanghai Expo.

According to the company, exports to the Asian country are expected to total 7m trays of Green- and Gold-branded fruit during 2010, rising to around 9m trays in 2011.

As reported in The Dominion Post, China has the potential to become Zespri's second-largest market within the next decade on the back of increased sales to a burgeoning Chinese middle class market.

'China is enormously important to us,' Zespri chief executive Lain Jager told the newspaper, adding that the Chinese market currently accounts for around one-third of the group's international sales growth.
