The production of genetically modified eggplant in the Philippines is temporarily on hold after the Supreme Court issued an order at the behest of Greenpeace.
According to a report in by Filipino newspaper the Sun Star, Greenpeace is acting on behalf of anti-GM protesters concerned GM crops could interbreed with those already being cultivated.
The newspaper had few details of the case to report, however.
'As per advice of our lawyer, we cannot share the copy with the media. Basically, the writ is for respondents to justify the field trials. I cannot go into the details for now,' Greenpeace Southeast Asia sustainable agriculture campaigner Daniel Ocampo told the newspaper.
Field trials of Bt eggplant are currently underway in four provinces and there are plans to extend trials into other parts of the country such as the Ilocos region, the newspaper reported.
