New Zealand-based produce distributor Fresh Partners Pacific Limited (FPPL) has established a subsidiary import-export company in India, according to a report on Fresh Plaza.

The Indian firm, Gourmet Traders Pvt Ltd (GTPL), based in Kolkata, has been in operation for several months under the stewardship of director Arjun Agarwal importing apples, kiwifruit, stonefruit, grapes, pears, citrus and plant material for varieties of pipfruit and gold kiwifruit to the local market, FPPL said.

GTPL is now working to maximise its volumes of year-round quality produce in order to supply Indian retail chains and specialist stores in addition to its current wholesale trade customer base, FPPL said.

FPPL director Martin Cowie revealed that GTPL is also planning to develop Indian produce exports to markets in Asia.

"As the world’s largest producer and consumer of fruit and vegetables, India affords several opportunities in the horticulture sector with its stable democracy and commercial environment,” said Cowie. “We are also confident in working with local growers and exporters to establish markets for Indian produce in the Far East Asian region."

Fresh Partners is also working closely with an Australian partner to serve its client base with Australian produce. Kiwifruit, citrus and carrot exports are being offered to customers in Asia, the Middle East and Europe, the firm said.
