Indian apples

Flooding and landslides have ruined over 30 per cent of the apple crop in the Uttarakhand area of India, equating to an estimated loss of over Rs220m, according to reports in the Business Standard.

The Indian financial daily reported 10 per cent of the current crop has been lost to flood waters, while a further 20 per cent was damaged in landslides, which have also hampered transportation of the fruit.

Uttarakhand, which lies to the north of the more important apple growing regions of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir, produces on average around 32,254 tonnes of apples per year.

India is experiencing a roller-coaster apple season this year with heavy rain and hail damaging crops and affecting size and availability.
