Mango growers in India’s Konkan region will receive financial assistance after suffering extensive losses last season, according to The Times of India.
At the request of Maharashtra’s state horticulture department, the Indian government has sanctioned an Rs 78.18m (US$1.45m) aid package, which will see growers receive Rs 15,000 (US$278) per hectare lost.
Of the 99,172ha planted to mangos in Konkan, 87,094ha lost 50 per cent of their fruit last summer.
A committee has been appointed to assist with the distribution of the funds.
The committee has recommended 52,256ha should be considered for assistance, as only 60 per cent of mango trees in the region produce fruit on a yearly basis.
