Global freight forwarder and logistics services provider Damco has secured a permanent licence to operate under its own legal entity in Myanmar, Logistics Manager reports.
This achievement makes Damco one of the first supply chain solution providers to offer comprehensive end-to-end logistics services for the Myanmar market.
Myanmar recently opened to business last year in the wake of the country’s reform process, which has seen companies from the US, Europe and elsewhere bid to bring their business there.
The country is home to a substantial market of 60m people.
Damco is working to help reduce short- and long-term business volatility in the country by working with UK and Danish human rights institutes there.
The company was originally involved in a larger fact-finding mission in May 2012, which involved consulting NGOs, local companies and diplomats.
A resource centre was subsequently set up within the British Council in Yangon, southern Myanmar, as well as an experienced business development manager liasing with Damco’s top customers to survey business conditions.
Damco is currently putting an investment plan into place to ensure its current consolidation and container deployment activities continue for many future years.
The company is also in the process of setting up its own office there, having already established a container freight station operation in Yangon after securing business by several of its global accounts to manage their first shipments from Myanmar.
