Generic bananas

In a blow to fruit fetish consumers across China, the ‘seductive’ ingestion of fresh bananas during live online streams has been outlawed in the People’s Republic, according to media reports.

The new regulations are aimed at stamping out ‘inappropriate and erotic' online material and will require live-streaming sites to monitor their videos for such content 24-hours a day, New Express Daily has reported.

The Daily Mail suggested the move was a response to a growing number of websites showing young girls performing suggestive acts on bananas in order to get past government censors on adult content.

The new legislation has been the source of much conjecture on Chinese social media, with many questioning how the laws will be policed. “How do they decide what's provocative when eating a banana?” one social media user asked, according to the BBC.

Others have pondered why the legislation has been framed around bananas. “They will all start eating cucumbers, and if that's no good, yams,” another social media user added.
