New Zealand Compac apple sorter

Auckland-based company Compac, which designs and builds sorting equipment for the fruit industry, has received NZ$3.7m in government funding for a research and development project.

TechNZ will invest the money over 30 months, in a project undertaken by Compac, to build a high-speed sorting and grading machine for delicate and irregular-shaped fruit, announced research, science and technology minister Wayne Mapp today (Thursday) in a statement.

Compac, which manufactures fruit and vegetable packing technology, machinery, software and electronic products, will match TechNZ’s funding for the project.

Compac general manager Bob Shaw said the funding recognises the company’s international reputation for innovation.

“This is a very big milestone for Compac,” he said. “We believe this marks for us the entry into a number of new market segments, where we can utilise our expertise in packhouse technology and solutions. This will make us a stronger company and will expand our presence across the horticultural industry.”

TechNZ is the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology's business assistance programme.
