Vegetable prices in China have witnessed considerable fluctuations in the last two months, rising in April before dropping significantly in May.
In April, the consumer price index registered 2.4 per cent higher compared with the same month the previous year. Rising food prices, particularly vegetables, were reported to be the primary driver of the increase.
However, vegetables in China have witnessing a rapid decline in price since the end of April. On 20 May, Chinese news website ECNS reported that official data showed that they had dropped 15 per cent since 23 April.
The data monitored the prices of 21 types of vegetables in major cities throughout the country. According to the ECNS, more than 90 per cent of vegetables had registered a notable decline in price.
