China's food exports saw their first year-on-year growth in the last five months, with March exports hitting US$2.62bn, a rise of 8.9 per cent on a year earlier.

Fruit exports lead the charge, reported Xinhua News, with 23.5 per cent growth in March.

Over the whole first quarter, food exports totalled US$7.17bn, a 5.5 per cent drop on the same quarter last year, according to figures from China's General Administration of Customs (GAC).

China’s food exports had been falling since October last year, attributed to the global financial crisis and the melamine milk scandal.

Government efforts to improve food safety and increase exports began to pay off, resulting in the rise.

The GAC said the demand for food was still there, but the economic downturn and food safety concerns could still be seen in export volumes of vegetable and fruit juice and canned mushrooms.
