China apples

Chinese apple prices hit new heights in late October, boosting apple grower incomes but leaving consumers out of pocket, according to Xinhuanet.com.

Nationwide, retail prices for apples rose over 20 per cent year-on-year as of October 25, the report said. Premium-quality fruit fetched Yuan15-20 per kg (US$2-3) in supermarkets in China's largest cities, such as Beijing and Shanghai.

Apple growers in Shandong welcomed the price rises, and expected their incomes to double this year as a result.

However, the price hike has hit some low-income consumers hard, the report said, leaving some unable to afford apples.
