China's Ministry of Agriculture said on Monday that the quality of the country's fruit and vegetables had improved in 2009.

The ministry has released its annual report based on studying agricultural products, and said 96.4 percent of vegetables had met safety standards in 2009, up by 0.1 per cent on the previous year.

For fruit, the report said 98 per cent of products met the required standards, CriEnglish.com reported.

In 2009 the inspections became more detailed, covered more categories, and were carried out in 259 cities, compared to only 36 major cities previously.

The ministry said it would step up controls over the use of prohibited pesticides in 2010 in order to further improve the quality and safety of agricultural produce.
