China has seen the value of foreign trade in agricultural products increase by 28.7 per cent year-on-year during the first 11 months of 2011, according to the country’s ministry of agriculture.

During this time exports of agricultural products increased 24.2 per cent to Yn54.32bn (US$8.64bn), while exports increased 31.8 per cent to Yn84.08bn, meaning the trade deficit in this sector increased by 48.2 per cent year-on-year to Yn29.75bn.

Part of this deficit increase was the result of a spike in rice imports, which surged 86.3 per cent to 536,000 tonnes, while exports fell by 17.3 per cent to 458,000 tonnes.

Imports of sugar, edible vegetable seeds, and edible vegetable oils also added to the deficit.

Meanwhile, exports of vegetables increased by 20 per cent and exports of fruit increased by 30 per cent.
