STI said new investments will increase capacity and reliability ahead of 2024/25 cherry campaign
The Port of San Antonio’s San Antonio Terminal Internacional (STI) has entered the final stage of construction on its new reefer tower park after two years of work. The US$13mn investment will significantly boost the terminal’s capacity for the 2024/25 cherry season.
As reported in Soy Chile, STI said the 27 new towers will provide the terminal with more than 2,600 connections, giving it “the largest capacity in the country to store refrigerated containers and consolidating San Antonio as the main point of departure for Chilean cherry exports”. Last season the port handled more than 10,000 containers of Chilean cherries.
STI’s general manager, Andrés Albertini, commented: “We have invested more than US$60mn, which includes a new reefer tower park. Cherries have become one of the country’s main exports and our terminal is prepared for a great season. This year we will have the most modern infrastructure to guarantee exporters the best operating standards in the industry”.
STI’s maintenance and infrastructure manager, Pablo Sánchez, added: “Having a new refrigerated cargo park not only increases our capacity, but also our reliability, facilitating the monitoring of the temperature of each container by our team. We already have all our towers and RTG cranes connected to new electrical rooms, which ensures the highest standards of availability and reliability”.
The new cargo park will be run using 100 per cent renewable energy.
